Conversations about relationships

I was having an IM conversation with a friend. She told me that people should avoid relationships until they are 40. I told her I am 32 years old and I might just follow her advice. She told me "Spend the next 8 years becoming a person you'd fall in love with if you were a chick."

I am not sure who that person is. I get what she is saying, I am just not sure where that would lead me. How do I even figure out who that person would be?
