HP OS

I saw a Engadget article about how HP is considering making it own OS to counter Vista. I am surprised this has not happened earlier. The issue for PC makers is that you need to have enough software for people to use. Basing an OS on Linux gives you a large number of programs, but maybe not all the programs a user wants to use. It might be worth having a collection of popular Linux programs that are easy for your customers to install and use without having to tweek the OS.

Any computer manufacture has to offer windows. The question is can you make a compelling product that does not have windows. I think it can be done. After a compelling product, you need a marketing message to tell people why they do not need windows. That might be a bit harder.
