Career Builder has just run an article called Seven Signs It's Time to Toss Your Resume. It is pretty good. I am worried that I will have no idea how to write my resume next time I need to. I have been at TiVo so long I am not sure how I will fit all that on a Resume.
Just remember that resumes are all about credibility. If you can get the interview with your resume, your next step is to prove your resume is credible. After you get your resume into the right hand and you get an interview, here are the next 7 things you need to know.
1. Know Your Resume - This sounds basic but if it is on your resume make sure you know it. If a candidate has something on their resume they do not understand, it is easy to see. Many interviewers will disengage right there. If you are using industry lingo on your resume, you better know what it means.
2. Know the Companies on Your Resume - In Silicon Valley there are always people who know people at other companies. If your description of the company does not match what the interviewer knows about the company it can hurt your credibility. You need to be able to explain your place in the organization.
3. Be Ready To Talk about every job on your resume - If you put a job on your resume be ready to talk about it in the interview. If you do not want to talk about it, leave it off or minimize what you write about it. You never know what will catch an interviewers eye on your resume.

Have specific examples of what you describe on your resume - If you helped implement a Knowledge Data Base for your company, come to the interview with a few specific stories about what that was like. Good interviewers what to know about specifics. You need to be able to talk about the projects and duties on your resume. If you are vague you will leave the interviewer with a negative feeling.
5. Use Your Resume to Ask Questions to the Interviewer - If an interviewee does not ask any questions, there is something wrong. Many times I think the person is not interested in the job. Asking questions is an good way to express your interest in the job. Asking questions that relate to your resume is a way to express your strengths while asking a question. Asking good questions in an interview is a good way to create a good atmosphere with the interviewer.
6. Be Ready to answer the Same Questions over and over again - Many times second and third interviews are with many people. Often interviewers ask the same questions as the previous people do. Make sure you answer is consistent the whole interview. These interviewers will talk to each other and they will find the inconsistency.
7. Be Ready to Explain Gaps in Your Resume - Gaps in a resume is often a warning flag. If you can explain those gaps you can get past those feelings. It is often a good idea to have a second resume with you that include those gaps filled in.
