Legal Use
I have used BitTorrent for the first time today it it was totally legal. I have been avoiding using any file sharing software. I do not want to be sued by the RIAA.
I found out from Wired News that SXSW is offering a Torrent of Free Tunes. For the last couple of years they have been offering MP3 of some of the bands playing at SXSW. It is cool that they have bound all the files into a torrent. It keeps me from having to sit at a browser for six hours clicking "download linked file to..."
I think this is a great idea for any website that lets people download songs. I think more sites should look into this. I know there are lots of record companies that have sample tracks on their website. If they offered their tracks as a bit torrent it would expose the fans to more bands. This is the kind of forward thinking that records labels need to look toward in the changing music landscape.
