First Amendment and students

A friend send me an article about what students think of the first amendment. This does not surprise me all that much. The First Amendment does not become important to many people until someone tries to shut you up. My guess is that no one has tried to quite these kids on anything important.

It is also not like they get that much protection from the rest of the constitution when they are in school. The Fourth Amendment seems to not exist in American Schools. They can be searched at any time. Many kids have to be searched to get into school.

We need to worry about what happens once they actually get out into the world. Will they care enough to try to protect their rights when it is important? It is hard to say. Maybe we are conditioning students to follow the rules so well they are not going to realize they have rights.
