John Kerry accepting the nomination
As many of my readers know, I am a registered Republican. I have been a Republican for most of my life. I am an old school, low taxes, less government, free trade Republican. I have not been all that happy with the Bush administration. I think that the Iraq war has been a boondoggle. For not finding WMDs alone has made me take a second look at voting for Bush.
Part of me thinks my thoughts on the election and my vote are of little value. I live in California and I think that Bush has no chance to win this state. I know three other people here in Silicon valley who are going to vote for Bush. I know 40 other people who are going to vote for Kerry. About 35 of them would vote for anyone to get Bush out of the white house.
Since I am still undecided on how I am going to vote for, I took as much time as I could to watch the Democratic Convention in Boston. There were a lot of things that turned me off. There are a lot of other democrat's I could not vote for if they were running for President.
I liked most of John Kerry's speech. I liked the fact that he is not great at giving speeches but running over his applause lines and rushing his speech. It made me feel less manipulated. I guess that I what I do not like about John Edwards. Edwards is such a good speaker that I feel that I cannot tell if he is telling the truth. My Democrat friend I have talked to so far wish he gave a better speech.
I was worried about one part of Kerry's speech. He said there would be a tax cut for the Middle Class, a balanced budget, smaller classrooms, and health care "that's affordable and accessible for all Americans". On top of that he said "I will reduce the tax burden on small business. And I will roll back the tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals who make over $200,000 a year, so we can invest in health care, education and job creation."
By raising taxes on the top 2% of Americans will not pay for all these things. The numbers just do not add up. I want to know what is on the top of this list. What will John Kerry do first? What is the more important thing on the laundry list. The numbers just do not add up. He will not be able to do all these things.
He is not going to have the low interest rates of the 1990's. He likely will not have anything like the Internet boom of the 1990's. This make it hard on him then it was on Clinton. I want to know more details.
I will say this, John Kerry did not blow me away. he did not close the door on George W. Bush for me. It will be an interesting 90 some days.
