What Would Jesus Drive?!?

There are a group of Christian Environmentalist who are asking What Would Jesus Drive? The idea is simple. Do you think that Jesus would drive a polluting gas guzzling SUV? More to the point is what should Christians be driving? The tag line for the site is: because transportation is a moral issue. Here is something taken from the web site:

The WWJDrive Campaign is designed to initiate a discussion in the United States about how our transportation choices are moral choices. What transportation choices should Christians be making? Should Christians encourage automakers to build more efficient vehicles? Should Christians encourage government leaders to fund public transportation and increase fuel economy standards?

Pat Robertson thinks the idea of linking Jesus to an anti-SUV campaign borders on blasphemy. I think he is missing the point. The question is not what would Jesus do, but what do we think Jesus would want us to do.

This raises a larger question for me. Where do we want religion to stop and start in our lives. Religious people will say that every action they take is motivated by religion. Most people I have know what a separation between their spiritual life and their secular life. They do not want to think of God when they choose their car, insurance carrier, or gas station. I think Americans want to see these things as two separate lives.

When I look at Islam there are a lot of people that live their religion everyday. They try not to pull apart the world into spiritual and secular parts. We can debate how well that works for them overall. I think that a lot of people in America who feel outside the church, would like to see people live their religions. We see them talk one life and live a different one. It pushes us away from church and religion.

If you asked me what I really think, I would tell you that Jesus would not drive anything. He would take the bus.
