Religion and Free Speech
I keep on asking myself what about this case. A writer is getting sueded in France for saying Islam is "the stupidest religion". The plaintiffs are saying it is the same as hate speech. They are acting like criticism of Islam is criticism of Muslims. Are they the same thing or are they two different things?
I will have to side with the writer here. If you cannot critique the ideas of a religion there is nothing holding those ideas in check. If he thinks Islam is stupid, he should be able to say so in interviews. We have to be able to live with the down side of free speech. We cannot have have only the good parts of free speech.
